Baseball Dictionary

At Hobby Baseball, we decided to create a dictionary with basic baseball terminology that will help you learn and understand everything about the hot-ball sport.

 

Umpire: This is how any of the umpires in the baseball game are known.

Starter: The pitcher who starts the game.

Swing: It is the wide movement that the player makes with the bat to try to connect with the ball.

Ball: It is a bad pitch, which goes outside the strike zone and in which one does not swing.

Bases loaded: This is when there are runners from the offensive team on all bases.

Base on balls: This is when the pitcher accumulates four bad throws and the player at bat can move to first base.

Hit by base: It is when the batter goes to first base because the ball touched him on his body or uniform during the pitch.

Diamond: It is the playing field.

Double play: It is the play in which the team that is on the defensive makes two outs.

Double: A hit that allows the player to reach second base.

Hot corner: This is the name given to third base due to the power of the hits that go to that area.

Foul: Hit outside the legal playing area.

Major Leagues: This is the name given to the Professional Baseball League of the United States.

Grand Slam: This is what it is known as when you hit a home run with the bases loaded.

Hit: When a batter puts the ball into the field of play after a hit and allows it to reach at least one base.

Homerun: It is when the batterhits the ball, goes around the bases and scores a run along with all the players who were on base, during the same play.

Infield: This is the name given to the area that includes home plate, first, second and third base.

Inning:This is how the game is divided and includes one turn for each team on offense. Each at-bat is limited to three outs and has no limit on the number of runs allowed .

Perfect game: It is when the team does not allow any of the opposing offensive players to touch base.

Lineup: It is the team’s starting lineup.

Manager: This is the person who handles or strategizes. This is the equivalent of a technical director.

Mound: Elevated place in the center of the field from where the pitcher throws the ball.

Ninth: That’s what we call the team in baseball.

Baseball player: Refers to the baseball player.

Play ball: Expression with which the referee starts the game.

Pitcher: Pitcher.

Strikeout , strikeout or strikeout: It is when a player accumulates three strikes.

Reliever: A pitcher who replaces the starter.

Rolling or ground ball: It is when the batted ball goes at ground level.

Base stealing: When a player attempts to advance from one base to another to surprise the team that is on defense.

Safe: When a player reaches base before the ball.

Single: A hit that allows the player to advance to first base.

Strike: It is the negative count for an offensive batter, which results after not hitting a ball thrown by the pitcher towards the diamond.

Triple: A hit that allows the player to reach third base.

Triple play: A play in which the three outs necessary to end the opponent’s turn on offense are made.

Walk off: hit that ends the game.
